Kolega elected onto new CNSF Board of Directors
12/5/2009

New York Polet’s own Claudio Kolega has been voted onto the Board of Directors for the Croatian National Soccer Federation of USA and Canada (CNSF). Elections were held at the CNSF’s Annual General Meeting held in Toronto, Ontario last month. Delegates from all 25 team members were present at the meeting along with the 11 members of the current Board of Directors. The current Board had concluded its 2 year term and elections were held for a new Board. After being nominated for the Assistant Secretary position, Kolega won a unanimous vote by the CNSF delegates and accepted the Board position. Kolega joins a Board of Directors led by newly elected President Brian Capin of Dalmacija Streetsville. Capin has been part of the CNSF Board for several terms now and previously served as Vice President. The CNSF is the largest Croatian based soccer federation outside the borders of Croatia, with 25 club members from all over the United States and Canada; including clubs from Toronto, Chicago, Milwaukee, Cleveland, and Hamilton. The CNSF also boasts the largest Croatian soccer tournament in North America, when club members join together every Labor Day Weekend. Next year’s tournament, the 47th Annual, is being hosted by Hrvat St. Catherines. The federation was formed 47 years ago as a way to strengthen and spread Croatian culture and unity amongst different communities throughout the USA and Canada through the beautiful game of soccer. Kolega looks forward in working with President Capin and the rest of the Board to maintain the vision of Croatian unity and strength. For further information about the CNSF and its club members visit the federation’s website, www.hnns.org.

2009/2010 Polet Season Underway
11/5/2009

New York Polet Soccer Club’s 2009/2010 campaign is well underway. Last season saw Polet’s Over-30 team finish as Division ‘B’ runner-ups giving them promotion to the Long Island Soccer Football League’s (LISFL) Premier Over-30 Division. Despite a slow start (the team was 0-2-1 in its first 3 games), last year’s first team finished in second place yet again in the 2nd Division West and failed to gain automatic promotion to the LISFL’s 1st Division. Looking to compete in the Over-30 Premier Division and in an effort to push for the 2nd Division West title this year, the club has made some major changes during this past off season. A new home field, a new third division team, and a lot of new faces have the club excited for the upcoming league season.

New Home Field

Polet has officially moved to their new home field on the campus of the New York Institute of Technology in Old Westbury, Long Island. With newly installed field turf and access to locker rooms, the facility is an upgrade to the club’s previous home field. The players have also been impressed with the new field, as each of Polet’s three teams won their NYIT debuts this season.

Could This Be the Year?

The past two seasons have seen Polet’s first team finish in second place within their respective division. With only the first place teams in both the East and West divisions being promoted to the LISFL's 1st Division, Polet has failed to gain promotion. Club president and first team Coach Davor Rosini has the players focused early in the season and his team leads the West Division with a 3-1-1 record. Polet’s first team is led by team captain Anthony Viskovich and last year’s leading scorer, Misin Shala. In only his second season with the big club, 19-year old forward Nicholas Martelli is tied with Shala for the team’s lead in goals scored. Newcomers Fabio Sequeira, Liridon Meha, and Ajet Ademaj have helped solidify the team’s midfield. With a first round State Cup victory this past Sunday against the CSL’s FC Bulgaria, Polet is hoping this year will be a special one.

The New Look Over-30’s

So far the over 30 squad’s transition to the LISFL’s Premier Division has been a smooth one. The return of player’s Dalibor Kardum, Sime Bergam, and Sinisa Vujasinovic along with new pick ups Elvis Prorokovic, Boris Ribaric, and Tomislav Rumora has added lots of talent and excitement to this year’s squad. With main stays Zoran Sime Rendic and Mate Galovic in super form early on, Coach Dragan Jurkovic has his team sitting in the middle of the pack in a very competitive Premier Division. Add this past Sunday’s first round State Cup penalty shoot out victory against a strong Barnstonworth Rovers team from the CSL and the club sees nothing but success for this team for the rest of this season.

The New Third Team

Polet has added a third team to join the club’s first team and over-30 squads. With the first team currently playing in the LISFL’s 2nd Division and the Over-30 squad in the league’s Over-30 Premier Division, the third team has been entered into the league’s 3rd Division. Sammy Stupicic and Zvonimir Antolos have been named the team’s head coaches. Stupicic and Antolos have impressed so far and their squad has started the season off with a 2-1-1 record. First team players Guillermo Rios and Anderson Osorio center a team full of youngsters including Christopher Matura (20), brothers Michael (20) and Peter Rosini (16), Giuseppe Chiarelli (20), Mark Lisica (19), Leandro Mejia (20), Danny Costello (20) and Daniel Suppa (20). The young squad is an indication of a bright Polet future.

Polet defeats QLU to continue fine play
10/29/2008

A re-energized New York Polet side defeated Queens Liberty United over the weekend by a score of 1-0. It was Polet’s third straight shut-out victory following last week’s 3-0 defeat of Pelham SC in the first round of the 2008 Flamhaft State Cup and a 6-0 drubbing of Lindenhurst the week before that. This comes after a dismal start to the season, which saw the Croatian side manage only 1 point from its first three matches. Expectations were high to start the season with the team coming off a fine quarterfinals finish at this year’s HNNS tournament in London, Ontario and with the new signings of forward Misin Shala and defender Tom Skara. Shala brings his professional ties from Europe to the squad and Skara adds a host of Division 1 College credentials (2006 MAAC Defensive Player of the Year, multiple All-Conference Awards, 2006 and 2007 Regional All-American). So far this season, the team is playing with Captain Anthony Viskovich anchoring the defense flanked by fullbacks Brian Tunstall and Paul Santos. Veterans John Ivankic, Matthew Princi, and goalkeeper Claudio Kolega join Skara to make up the rest of Polet’s backline. Midfield starters include Robert Pribanic, Thomas Gelardi, Christian Racic, and Guillermo Rios with Vicko Sunjka, Ivica Gasparic and Sammy Stupicic in platoon. Part-timer Naim Kurtovic has joined junior Polet players, Ante Kendes and Christopher Matura, as Shala’s strike partners while Evan Woodhouse remains out with injury. Matura, 19, and Kendes, 17, are the youngest players on this year’s first team and have been proving that Polet has a bright future ahead.

Defending (and Scoring) in Lindenhust

Polet’s first victory came four weeks into the new campaign when the club traveled to Lindenhurst for a divisional match up. The first three goals of the game came from the Polet defense with Tunstall scoring on a rocket from 30 yards out and both Viskovich and Ivankic adding goals before half-time. The three defenders, along with Santos, were also the key in holding the home team scoreless in the 6-0 Polet win. Youngsters Matura and Kendes combined to score a goal, Kurtovic added another, and late substitution, Polet’s Coach and Club President Davor Rosini, showed that he could still play the game at the age of 44 and scored a beautiful goal to end the scoring at 6.

True to form in the first round of the State Cup

Polet fielded their full first team squad for the first time in the season when the team hosted Pelham SC from the Eastern District Soccer League in the first round of the State Cup. With a full squad, Polet was true to form and dominated the visitors for the full 90 minutes. Kurtovic and Shala proved to be a potent combination up front. But it was an outstanding ball from Tunstall that set Kurtovic free and allowed him to open the scoring with a beautiful goal in the 20th minute. The Polet defense again led by Viskovich dominated the backline and Skara, Gelardi, and Racic gave up nothing in the middle of the field. Gelardi added a second goal to end the half and Skara scored his first as a Polet player late in the second half. It was a good victory versus a solid Pelham side and proved that with a full squad, Polet will be difficult to defeat this season.

Madness (and Victory) at Flushing Memorial

Visitors Queens Liberty United arrived at Flushing Memorial HS field last Sunday in an important divisional match up with cleats flying. It was a rough game from the first whistle and QLU attempted to match Polet’s skill with dirty play and tackles. Polet proved to be the better team in the first 20 minutes of the game as they completely dominated the visitors but could not put the ball in the back of the net. Countless opportunities went a stray and Polet had nothing to show for the excellent effort as they went into halftime scoreless. With Shala dominating QLU’s backline all game long, the visitors reverted to dirty tactics and tried desperately to bring Shala down at every opportunity. QLU earned two consecutive straight red cards in the second half on nasty tackles against Shala and added 4 yellow cards as the game began to spin out of control. Shala was again taken down on a nasty challenge in the 80th minute, this time in the penalty area, and earned Polet a penalty shot. Viskovich proved again why he is the leader of this team and calmly buried the ball into the left corner just inches away from the diving QLU goalkeeper. 1-0 for Polet, giving them their third straight shut out victory and some momentum going into November.

Polet advances to quarterfinals of the 45th Annual HNNS tournament
9/2/2008

New York Polet participated in the 45th Annual HNNS Federation tournament this past weekend. This year’s tournament, which is held every Labor Day weekend, was hosted by Croatia London/St. Thomas and was held in their hometown of London, Ontario. This was Polet’s third tournament since joining the HNNS, www.hnns.org, back in 2006 and would prove to be their most successful. Boasting a strong line-up which included Captain Anthony Viskovich, Zeljko Faraguna, Naim Kurtovic, Misin Shala, and goalkeeper Ante Vucetic, the boys from Polet took London by storm and finished undefeated in group play; beating Croatia Sault Ste. Marie, Hrvat St. Catherine’s, Dalmacija Streetsville, and tying the home team London. Polet won Group E outright and earned a spot in this year’s quarterfinals. Making it to the knock out stages of such a highly competitive tournament is a tremendous accomplishment and one that the club can be proud of. The New Yorkers drew London in their quarterfinal game in a rematch of their 1-1 tie with the home team during group play. London proved to be the better team the second time around and outlasted a tired Polet squad by a score of 3-1 to advance to the semi-finals. There, London lost to the eventual tournament Champions, Croatia Cleveland, 1-0. This year's squad also included Christian Racic, Robert Pribanic, Thomas Gelardi, Brian Tunstall, Paul Santos, Vicko Sunjka, Evan Woodhouse and Guillermo Rios. Polet rookies Ante Kendes (17) and Christopher Matura (18) played in their first ever Federation tournament. Congratulations to all the Polet players, the coaches and managers, and to their fans for a great tournament. See you all next year in Cleveland where Croatia Cleveland will host the 46th Annual HNNS tournament. GO PO-O-O-O-O-LET.

Croatia - Germany 2:1
6/12/2008

Croatia claimed an impressive win over pre-tournament favourites Germany to reach the Euro 2008 quarter-finals.

Darijo Srna broke the deadlock on 24 minutes when he beat Marcell Jansen to Danijel Pranjic's cross and fired home.

Croatia were gifted a second goal on 63 minutes when Ivan Rakitic's cross came off Lukas Podolski and rebounded off the post for Ivica Olic to slot home.

Podolski pulled a goal back with a late drive but Bastian Schweinsteiger's red card ended German hopes in injury time.

It was a famous victory for Croatia, and an echo of their 3-0 success over the same opposition in the 1998 World Cup quarter-finals, but it casts serious doubts over Germany's credentials for the European crown.

Dalmacija Kup 2008
5/17/2008

New York Polet Soccer Club hosted H.N.K. Dalmacija Streetsville from Oakville, Canada Saturday, May 3rd, in what was deemed the first annual ‘Dalmacija Kup’. More than 350 people showed up at the Hrvatski Kulturni Centar Sv. Nikola Tavelic in New York City for the banquet. The Center was filled with different faces from all over the local community along with fifty guests who traveled with Streetsville from Canada. The banquet was highlighted by performances from local kolo groups ‘Hrvatska Ruza’ from Astoria and ‘Hrvatski Plamen’ from Douglaston along with Oakville’s tamburica group, ‘Zvuci Hrvatske’. Several poems from Ivica Dobra helped inspire the crowd in between group performances. The event was organized in an effort to bring the two Croatian communities from Canada and the U.S. closer together. Polet club president Davor Rosini and Streetsville president Brian Capin stood on stage together and vowed to make the ‘Dalmacija Kup’ an annual event. “We’ll see you New Yorkers in Canada next year” declared Capin. On behalf of Polet, Rosini thanked the Canadians for making the long trip and for helping make the event such a huge success. Rosini also pointed to the local Croatian community in New York for their support and looked to everyone to help in the future success of Polet. The cultural portion of the night was followed by music and dancing with Grupa ‘Freedom’ playing late into the night.
Earlier in the day, the two Croatian teams took to the soccer pitch at Flushing Memorial H.S. Field in a friendly match. With over 150 spectators in attendance along with Croatian General Consul Petar Ljubicic, Polet, led by forward Zeljko Faraguna’s three goals, won the inaugural ‘Dalmacija Kup’ by defeating Streetsville by a score of 4-1. Polet’s eighteen year old phenom Nicholas Martelli made the score 4-0 before Streetsville got one back right before halftime. Streetsville took the momentum going into the second half and it took two critical saves by Polet’s goalkeeper Claudio Kolega, including a save on a penalty shot, to keep Streetsville from getting any closer. Preceding the main match was a legends game between the old timers from Polet and Astoria Rudar Club. The old timer’s competition was highly competitive and Rudar took the ‘Legends Cup’ by a score of 2-0.
Polet club Secretary Zvonimir Antolos made it clear that the day’s events was more than just a soccer game and party but a way to get the entire Croatian community back together. “The event was a way to help bring some freshness and excitement back to the Croatian community here in New York. We wanted everyone to be a part of it.” Many people took part in organizing the event and NY Polet Soccer Club would like to thank them all. Especially the organizing committee of Davor and Mirela Rosini, Dragan and Julie Jurkovic, Zvonimir Antolos, Josip Jurkovic, Claudio Kolega, Vicko Sunjka, Zoran Sime Rendic, Nikica Majic, Kristina Nanjara, Branko Kleva, Robert Pribanic, Sammy Stupicic, and Brankica Orlic. And a special thanks to Boris Nanjara, Stevie Grgas, Joe and Anthony Kolega, Vlade Grubisic, Tomislav “Cogi” Cogelja, Tommy Vucetic, and Ivica Gasparic for helping to make the event a huge success. A list of the event sponsors can be found on this website.

2/23/2008

A horific story from England where number one Croatia Striker Eduardo Da Silva suffered a bad injury. In 3rd minute of match against Birmingham City, Arsenal striker was injured by unexcusable slide tackle of Martin Taylor. It seems that Eduardo will have to miss upcoming Euro Cup. We wish him fast and speedy recovery.

Thompson Concert (November 2007, by Claudio)

Thompson concerts a show of Peace, Love, Faith, and Unity.
11/6/2007

Amidst all the false accusations and lies spread throughout the news media over the past few weeks against Marko Perkovic "Thompson", as well as under the threats of protests and cancellations, both the November 2nd and 3rd concerts at the Croatian Center in Manhattan went on without a hitch. A few of the misinformed New York news channels along with a small group of protesters, a dozen or so maximum, gathered in front of the Sveti Nikola Tavelic Hall before the concert on Friday night. Both groups had arrived early, ready to antagonize the Croatian patrons who were able to secure tickets to the sold out concert in an effort to somehow substantiate their malicious allegations and misrepresentations of Thompson, his belief, and those of his fans and the Croatian people. To their disappointment, the Croatians who arrived for the concert did not give in to their antagonistic tactics and represented themselves with dignity and in a peaceful manner. By the time Marko Perkovic began his first song, the reporters had come to the realization that this night was not going to be filled with hate and racism the way that the Weisenthal Center had so proclaimed it would be and the news trucks drove off. It was only a matter of time until the weak protest disbanded. It was the night that it was meant to be from the first moment Thompson announced that his Bilo Jednom U Hrvatskoj tour in North America would start in the heart of the greatest city in the world. It was a night when Thompson would silence his critics, singing songs of the love he has for God, his family, and his Homeland. Both concerts were a great success. Thompson was at his best and so were all his fans. All the Croatians in New York should be proud of the way they handled themselves during this on slaught of anti-Croatian propaganda. It was a true test of our character and we proved that Croatia and its people stand for Peace, Love, Faith, and Unity.

Team effort brings NY Polet closer to League Cup Trophy
6/10/2007

NY Polet has finally won against Istria in quarter finals of LISFL League Cup. Endo of regular time ended with 1:1 score. Even though NY Polet had more chances and played much better, ball just would not cross Istria's goal line. Starting in overtime NY Polet continued with pressure and good team play. In 14th minute of overtime cross from Gelardi has resulted in nice header goal from Galovic. Still NY Polet kept their game on top level which resulted in another goal scored by left midfield Pribanic.
NY Polet is still waiting to find out who will they have to face in semi-finals of the Cup.

Finally some new pictures

Thanks to Mario from 0ver 30 team we finally have some new pics to put up.

NY Polet vs. West Indies 0:3 (May, 2007)

NY Polet vs. Islip 3:4 (May, 2007) Over 30

Unfortunately there is no good news to report since both teams keep loosing.
Even though loss against West Indies looks pretty bad, we did play as a team and in my opinion we played pretty good. Unfortunately 3 chances Wes Indies had they scored. We can only hope for better luck against Elmont Italians this Sunday.

Polet prepares for State Cup Semifinal showdown against Manhattan Celtic
4/21/2007

New York Polet will face Manhattan Celtic from the Cosmopolitan Soccer League tomorrow at Flushing Memorial H.S. Field at 10 am. The match is the semifinal of the Flamhaft Gold State Cup. Last season, Polet advanced to the semifinals of the State Cup only to lose a 1-0 heartbreaker to Frosinone S.C. The Croatian side is hoping for a better result tomorrow against a very strong Celtic team which sits in second place in their division.

Happy Easter Everyone
4/7/2007

NY Polet would like to wish happy Easter to everyone.

You might notice that there was no fresh news in a while. Well that is probably due to a fact that we lost last few games. No one was really in a mood to write anything.

However, here I am. I took some time this weekend to change few things. I also added a new page. It is Cro Places page.

There you can find some of the Croatian Places in New York that might be of interest to you. Unfortunately I probably missed a lot of places that should be included in there. I will be adding more as time goes, however, any help is much appreciated. You can email me any places that you might think should be included in there as well. Also if you think my description does not make sense or it could be better, feel free to send me your version and I will post it there.

Enjoy and hopefully you find this somewhat useful.

Polet advances in League Cup with amazing come from behind victory
3/15/2007

New York Polet scored five unanswered goals in the final 15 minutes of Sunday’s matchup against Five Towns S.C. in the first round of the League’s Themann Cup for an improbable and amazing 5-2 come from behind victory at Flushing Memorial Field.

Kolega’s mistake gives Five Towns the ball and the lead

It was the team’s first game back from winter break and it was veteran goalkeeper Claudio Kolega’s first game back from injury. Kolega had been sidelined with a knee injury since the Croatian Federation tournament in Florida on Labor Day Weekend. In only the 2nd minute of the opening half, Polet’s sweeper Anthony Viskovich intercepted a long pass from the oppositions forward and played a pass back to his keeper. Kolega controlled the ball at the top of box and tried to play the ball back to an opening Viskovich. The goalkeeper proved to be both rusty and unlucky as his pass was intercepted at the top of the goal box by the Five Towns forward and easily slotted into the empty net to give the visitor’s an early 1-0 lead.

Polet controls ball possession

The early goal did not hurt Polet’s confidence and the team swiftly took control of the game and the ball possession. Five Towns was pinned onto their half of the field for the remainder of the first half. Polet’s Naim Kurtovic and Freddy Rodriguez closed the half out with several excellent scoring chances. But the Five Towns defense, led by the excellent play of their goalkeeper, kept Polet at bay and the score at the end of the half at 1-0.

Polet down 2-0

The second half started strongly for Polet as they continued to control the run of play. Midfielder Tommy Gelardi had Polet’s best opportunity to tie the match up early in the second half only to be denied by an excellent save from the visitor’s net minder. Polet continually pushed forward in an effort to tie the match and several clear scoring chances were squandered in front of Five Town’s goal. The visitor’s took advantage of Polet’s offensive push and took a 2-0 lead in the 60th minute on a counter attack.

Sunjka’s determination

Polet’s deficit could have easily been more that 2 goals as the team continued to push forward and Five Towns continued to answer with the counter attack. Polet’s Vicko Sunjka dropped back from his usual midfield position to play right fullback in place of the injured Tommy Mazor. Sunjka was determined not to allow Five Towns another goal and broke up several long counter attacks to keep the score at 2-0 going into the final 15 minutes of the game.

Galovic-Rendic-Racic

In the 75th minute Polet won a free kick just outside Five Town’s box. Viskovich’s free kick found Christian Racic open at the far post. Racic sent a head ball back into the box which was controlled by Polet’s Zoran Sime Rendic and dropped to an on coming Mate Galovic. Galovic didn’t hesitate, putting the ball into the corner and cutting the score in half. Only 2 minutes later, it was Galovic again, controlling the ball down the center of the pitch and slotting a through ball over the top of the defense to an on rushing Rendic. Rendic chipped the goalkeeper and just like that, it was a tie game. Amazingly, on the ensuing kick off, Polet found possession of the ball and it was Galovic yet again, making a run down the center and slotting a pass over the top. Racic beat both the defender and the keeper to the ball and chipped it into the oppositions goal to give Polet the lead for the first time in the match, 3-2. It was the Galovic-Rendic-Racic show.

Rendic buries two more

A shocked Five Towns defense could not stop Polet’s on slaught. In the 85th minute, a Sunjka to Rodriguez combination set Racic free down the right flank. Racic’s cross was met by the head of a diving Rendic and into the net for Polet’s 4th and Rendic’s 2nd of the day. Two minutes later, Polet ended the scoring when Racic’s hustle beat a Five Towns defender to the end of a Gelardi pass. Racic slotted the ball across the box to an open Rendic who calmly scored his hat trick and gave Polet the improbable and amazing 5-2 victory.

Last Monday NY Polet was faced with Landshdowne Boys. At the moment they were first placed team with no loses yet. NY Polet made sure their standings changed that night. Before the end of first half, NY Polet has managed to take a 2:1 lead over Landshdowne Boys. In second half NY Polet took over the game and transferred their tactics to more offensive style. Second Division Indoor Soccer LISFL Update
2/22/2007

NY Polet has played 2 games so far this Tuesday. We did not do as well as we hoped we would but not all is lost either. NY Polet has lost their first game against 3rd division tem Dear Park. Final result of that game was 3:1 for Deer Park. The only goal scored for NY Polet was Viscovich. Even though NY Polet had few posts and crossbars, the ball just would not hit Deer Parks back net.

Next game NY Polet played against 2nd Division Farmingville team. After initiall loss NY Polet players stepped up the effort. This has paid of very quickly and NY Polet took a 1:0 lead. Goal scorer was Racic who was out with injury for the first half of the season. NY Polet kept a solid play in defense not letting Farmingwille to come back into the game. Finally 5 minutes before the end, Naim took a shoot which rebounded from Farmingville goalie. Fortunately for NY Polet, Gellardi was in the right spot blasting this rebound back where it belongs, behind Farmingville net. End result was 2:0 for NY Polet.

There are two more games NY Polet has to play against Elmont Italians and NY Rovers reserve.

Monday night soocer tournament
2/9/2007

NY Polet just entered Monday night’s tournament. This should be very good replacement for "Monday night Football" for Elijah. :)

First game was played and NY Polet unfortunately lost. NY Polet played "FC Einstein". Yes, we lost from "FC Einstein". However, it was a good wake up call to enter the rest of the season a bit smarter. Lack of team play might have cost NY Polet some points in this game but come back is inevitable.

Final score was 6:4 loss for NY Polet. Goal scorers were: Racic, Rendic, Gellardi and Viscovich.

Polet advances to State Cup quarterfinals
12/14/2006

Thomas Gelardi and Christian Racic each scored second half goals to help New York Polet advance to the quarterfinals of the State’s Flamhaft Cup with a 2-1 victory over Cosmo Damiani of the Italian American Soccer League (IASL) last Sunday.

Gelardi breakthrough

Polet entered the game at Flushing Meadows Park in excellent form and was confident in continuing their run in the State Cup against a strong IASL side. Gelardi, who played 2 seasons with Cosmo Damiani before rejoining Polet this season, was especially prepared for the match against his old teammates. After a scoreless first half, it was Gelardi who opened the scoring. Evan Woodhouse blasted a shot off the crossbar that bounced out to Gelardi who collected the rebound and slotted in the goal to give Polet the 1-0 lead early in the second half. Gelardi has been a mainstay in the center of Polet’s midfield all season long and his play this season is a big reason for the team’s recent success.

Racic returning to form

After being injured for most of the season, Racic returned to the lineup for only his third game. His play added energy in the midfield and his goal proved that he is almost back to full form. Racic took a pass from Gelardi and beat several Damiani players before ripping a half volley from 18 yards out over the keeper and into the top corner. The goal proved to be the game winner as Polet held on for the 2-1 victory.

Polet finishes strong

The win made Polet only one of two teams from the Long Island Soccer League (LISFL) still alive in the final eight of the State Cup. Going into the winter break, the team also sits in second place in their division only one point away from the division leaders with a game in hand. The squad should be proud of their efforts the first half of the season and we look forward to a successful continuation come the spring.

Polet too strong for Elmont Italia
12/3/2006

Zoran Sime Rendic and Anderson Osorio were on target today as New York Polet established themselves as one of the title contenders in the LISFL’s Second Division with a 2-1 win over Elmont Italia. Coming into today’s match at Flushing’s Memorial Field, Polet shared second place in the division standings with Elmont. Elmont was coming off a huge win a week earlier against current division leaders N.Y. West Indies United and were looking to continue their winning ways against the Croatian club.

Anderson Does It Again

After an evenly matched 0-0 first half, Anderson Osorio opened the scoring for Polet only 10 minutes into the second. Mate Galovic sent a cross through Italia’s box which deflected off Rendic and found Anderson at the right post for an easy tip in. The goal was Anderson’s fourth of the season and the 19 year old Polet striker has scored in each of the last three games.

Purgers Down the Left Flank

Polet continued to build up their play after Anderson’s goal and controlled the game’s tempo for much of the half. It wasn’t long after their first goal that Polet found the back of the net yet again in the 65th minute. Rendic and fellow Purger Robert Pribanic worked a nice give and go down the left flank which allowed Rendic an open shot from 20 yards out that just beat Elmont’s goalkeeper. Both Rendic and Pribanic continued their excellent form this season and the goal was Rendic’s fourth in eight league games.

Anderson Injured

Not everything was going Polet’s way in the second half. Anderson injured his knee in a 70th minute collision. Initial reports of the injury are not positive and Anderson will definitely be out of the line-up for next weeks 3rd Round State Cup match. The team was flat after Anderson’s injury and Elmont managed to cut Polet’s lead in half in the 80th minute on a defensive breakdown.

Complete Team Effort

Despite the goal, Polet pulled together and didn’t allow Elmont another opportunity. The Polet defense led by team captain Anthony Viskovich, Matthew Princi, Tommy Mazor, and Pribanic played well together. The squad put together a full team effort on the pitch today and proved that they will be in the hunt for the division title when league play continues after the winter break

Polet defeats the Flames at home
11/29/2006

New York Polet continued their strong league play this past Sunday by defeating the College Point Flames at home by a score of 4-1. After a scoreless first half, Polet found the net four times in the final 45 minutes. Midfielder Robert Pribanic opened the scoring in the 55th minute with a powerful one timer off a terrific pass from teammate Freddy Rodriguez. Striker Anderson Osorio followed Pribanic’s strike with a blast of his own from 20 yards out to put Polet up 2-0 in the 65th minute. The barrage of goals continued as the Flames had an answer for Osorio’s goal and scored in the 70th minute to cut the score in half. But Tommy Gelardi restored Polet’s lead in the 75th minute with another well placed powerful shot off the right post and into College Point’s net. Polet’s captain Anthony Viskovich and goalkeeper Marino Vucenik played outstanding to lead the Polet defense and Osorio put the game away in injury time with his second goal of the game. Polet 4, Flames 1.

The victory sets up a first place showdown this weekend against Elmont Italia. The game is being played at Polet’s home field, Flushing Memorial H.S., at 9am.

Polet advances to 3rd Round of State Cup with 3-2 win over Guyana Jrs.
11/24/2006

Pictures

New York Polet traveled to Fort Hamilton, Brooklyn last Sunday for a 2nd round State Cup match against Guyana Jrs from the N.Y. Cosmopolitan Soccer League. Polet knew they were in for a tough match after Guyana opened the scoring in only the 10th minute of the game. The deficit could have easily been 2-0 if it wasn’t for the heroics of Polet’s goalkeeper Marino Vucenik. Vucenik, only 18 years old, made a terrific save on a shot from point blank range after a defensive miscue in the 20th minute. The save seemed to inspire the team and it was another Polet youngster, Tommy Mazor, who knotted the score at one in the 25th minute. Mazor, 21, climbed over the Guyana defense and scored on a powerful head ball off an Evan Woodhouse free kick. It was Mazor’s first career goal for Polet and the first of 3 straight unanswered for the team. After forward Woodhouse was tripped in the penalty area, team captain Anthony Viskovich easily scored from the penalty spot to put the team up 2-1 before the half. The Polet youth movement continued in the second half when Anderson Osorio, 19, took advantage of a Guyana defensive mistake and made the score 3-1 in the 55th minute. Guyana pulled one back from a penalty shot of their own in the 80th minute, but Vucenik made another terrific save in the final minutes to preserve Polet’s place into the 3rd round of the Cup.

Rendic scores twice as NY Polet defeats Real Mineola
10/22/2006

New York Polet won its fourth straight divisional game and its fifth straight overall today by defeating Real Mineola at home by a score of 2-1. Real caught the home team by surprise early in the contest and opened the scoring just 8 minutes in. Polet settled into the match after the goal and had several chances to equalize before Zoran Sime Rendic found the back of Real’s net in the 30th minute to knot the score at one. Freddy Rodriguez and Vicko Sunjka combined for a superb give and go that allowed Sujnka to slot a pass through to Rendic for the one time shot and score. It was Rendic again in the 60th minute as his header off the corner kick put Polet up for good. The victory assured Polet would stay on top of the Division 2 West standings before next weekend’s pivotal match up against fellow division leaders Elmont Italia at 2:30 pm at the Elmont Sports Complex.

Strong team play by NY Polet
10/16/2006

After a streak of 3 undefeated games in league, NY Polet decided not to disappoint. NY Polet has continued a wining streak into a State Cup competition by beating ASA McCarthy, a club from Cosmopolitan league. Even though NY Polet was a dominating team through out entire game, they were not able to score until close to the end of the game. This lack of scoring could also be attributed to a great day that ASA McCarthy goalie had.

However, NY Polet did not loose in concentration and team kept playing with patience and persistence. In 70th minute it looked like Pribanic would give a lead to NY Polet, but ASA McCarthy's goalie had a superb save against Polet's left winger. Only 12 minuets later in 82nd minute of the mach Pribanic had sent a superb long pass to forward Woodhouse, who with excellent move breaks away towards goalie for one on one duel. Finally guest goalie has capitulated and NY Polet secured a victory. Rest of the game ended in few more chances for Polet but nothing else was realized into a goal. It is also important to mention a great play by midfielder Gelardi who was closest to MVP of the game.

England on their knees
10/12/2006

Slaven Bilic Croatia’s Coach was on top of the world. Croatia has beaten on of the best in mach which Croatia Dominated. In 61' minute of the match Eduardo DaSilva (Dinamo Zagreb player) scored a beautiful header lob. And only 8 minutes later England conceded by scoring on own net. I guess Croatian pressure was so great that they just lost it. Or perhaps maybe they got punished for talking dirt against best fans in the world. Good job boys!!!! 2:0 Croatia is the winner!!!!

New York Polet Participates in 43rd Annual Croatian Federation Tournament
9/9/2006

New York Polet participated in its first ever Croatian National Soccer Federation of Canada & USA tournament. The 43rd annual Federation tournament was hosted by Croatia-Florida and was held in Coral Springs, Florida on Labor Day Weekend. New York Polet was only the third Croatian club from New York to ever be represented at the Federation tournament. Despite being drawn into the toughest group at the tournament, Polet was well organized and was prepared to represent the Croatian community of New York with class both on and off the field. Polet found themselves drawn in a group with perennial powerhouse club teams Croatia-Toronto, Croatia-Hamilton, and host Croatia-Florida. Both 13-time champions Toronto and last year’s runners up Hamilton were in the middle of their club seasons and were in excellent form. Croatia-Florida was playing with professional players the likes of former MLS star Mark Chung. Despite their tough competition, Polet battled in every game, losing to Hamilton 3-0 and to Florida 2-0. The last game against eventual champions Toronto found Polet down 2-0 at halftime. The start of the second half was delayed for 3 hours due to a lightning storm. After the 3 hour delay the second half became a formality and Toronto scored 3 more goals to give them a 5-0 win.
Toronto beat Florida in the semi-finals and played Hrvatski Orlovi of Milwaukee in the Championship game. Toronto-Croatia went on to win the final game and take the Croatia Cup by a score of 2-0. Congratulations to the champions and to the hosts, Croatia-Florida, for a successful tournament. Congratulations to all the New York Polet players and fans who participated in this year’s tournament. A special thanks to Polet’s tournament sponsors, Rosini Engineering. We look forward to next year’s Federation tournament being hosted by Croatia-Windsor. For more info on the tournament, Federation members, and previous champions and hosts, go to www.hnns.org.

NY Polet back on tracks
4/5/2006

Without three key starters playing and against the league’s first place team East Norwich, Polet faced an uphill battle at home this passed Sunday. Both teams were evenly matched through the first half with both teams having several chances to pull ahead. Polet’s backup Goalkeeper Marino Vucenik made two spectacular saves in the first half which kept the score even at zero through the first half.
In the second half, the tempo shifted to the home team when in the 65th minute, midfielder Damir Penava got the ball on the right flank, who drove passed the defense and slotted it passed the East Norwich goalkeeper to give Polet a 1-0 lead. After the goal, East Norwich applied pressure to Polet’s defense that were protecting their slim lead. Sweeper Anthony Viscovich and the rest of their defense were solid in front of Vucenik clearing everything in front of the net. In the 80th minute, with East Norwich pushing up for the tie, the ball was sent ahead for an odd man breakaway with midfielder Robert Pribanic driving through the oppositions defense and laying it off to Vicko Sunjka who delivered a fantastic strike that beat the goalkeeper to the near post from 20 yards out for a 2-0 lead. Polet showed heart and played with determination against a very good East Norwich team.

Racic scores twice to lead Polet over Five Towns at Home.
3/22/2006

Christian Racic scored twice in the first half to lead New York Polet past Five Towns FC at home this past Sunday. The home team held possession for most of the game and managed to pin Five Towns on their own half of the field for the majority of the match.

The first goal came at the ten minute mark. With Polet controlling the flow of play, the ball changed fields from the left fullback, Vicko Sunjka, to the right fullback, Matt Princi. After a quick give and go with right midfielder Freddie Rodriguez, Princi found a gap through the opposing team’s defense and slotted a through ball. Racic ran onto to the ball beating out Five Towns’ defense and shooting into the left side of the goal to give Polet the early 1-0 lead. Polet's confidence grew following the first goal and outside midfielders Rodriguez and Robert Pribanic began to terrorize the opposition with multiple runs down their respective flanks. A barrage of crosses came in from both sides, but the home team failed to capitalize on multiple opportunities. Numerous crosses were wasted with shots going either wide or over the net, but it appeared only a matter of time before Polet would get their second goal.

Center Midfielder Damir Penava received the ball at center field, broke past an opposition player and then threaded a superb pass between Five Towns’ center backs. Racic again found the lane and ran through from the midfield to meet the ball, out pacing an opposition defender and finishing with a left footed low chip shot past a sliding opposition goal keeper.

Polet produced quite a few more chances building the play up from the back with efficient ball movement and creating beautiful flow of play, but a third goal proved to be elusive.

Racic’s goal in the final minutes lifts Polet to victory at home against Lake Grove
11/14/2005

New York Polet entered their match against Lake Grove this past Sunday at Flushing Memorial H.S. with a team depleted from injuries and suspensions. The team needed to call upon several players from their Over-30 squad; Davor Rosini, Dragan Popovic, Davor Glavan, Tomislav “Splico” Kadic, and Branko “Makadonac” all played key roles in the game. Polet started off in impressive fashion and scored two goals within the first 10 minutes of the match. Polet’s Anthony Viskovich opened the scoring in the 5th minute off a feed from Christian Racic. Only 3 minutes later, central midfielder Damir Penava put striker Evan Woodhouse in on goal with a pretty through ball. Woodhouse did well to control the pass and buried a left footed shot into the top corner of Grove’s net to give Polet the early 2-0 lead. Lake Grove was able to get a goal back right before the half when the referee failed to whistle an apparent foul on a play where a Grove player
collided with Polet’s goalkeeper Claudio Kolega at the top of the penalty area. The collision caused Polet’s net minder to drop the cross, allowing Grove to score. It was 2-1 at halftime.
Lake Grove found the equalizer midway through the second half when Polet was again victimized by a referee “no call” and the Grove forward scored from an apparent offside position. With the score knotted at 2-2 late in the second half, Polet needed some last minute heroics and got it from Racic. Racic ran in on a cross from Zoran Rendic and headed home the game winner. The crucial win left Polet with 2 wins, 2 losses, and 2 ties in 6 divisional matches. Next Sunday, November 20th, the team travels to Cardozo High School to play Jamaica Portuguese.

New York Polet voted into the Croatian National Soccer Federation of Canada & USA
11/6/2005

New York Polet representatives Davor Rosini and Claudio Kolega traveled to Toronto, Ontario over the weekend to attend the 43rd Annual Meeting for the Croatian National Soccer Federation of Canada and the USA (CNSF). The CNSF is the largest Croatian based soccer federation outside the borders of Croatia, with 23 club members from all over the United States and Canada; including clubs from Toronto, Chicago, Hamilton, Milwaukee, Cleveland, San Jose, and Fort Lauderdale. The CNSF also boasts the largest Croatian soccer tournament in North America, when club members meet every Labor Day Weekend at a pre-approved host city. A different member club is chosen at the Federation’s Semi-Annual meeting and each member of the Federation is given the opportunity to host the Labor Day tournament. The 2006 tournament is being hosted by Fort Lauderdale Croatia. Both New York Hajduk and the former New York Croatia were members of the CNSF. But over the past few years there has been no member from the New York area, leaving the Federation without a representative from one of the largest Croatian communities in North America. New York Polet was invited to apply for membership and after both Rosini and Kolega addressed the delegates, Polet was unanimously voted in as the 24th member of the CNSF. New York Polet is honored to represent the New York Croatian community in the Federation. The club wants to thank all the member delegates of the CNSF, its Board of Directors, and especially its former President, msgr. Ante Nikolic, for their support. A special thanks to Fra. Ivica Majstorovic and the New York Croatian Parish, Sts. Cyril & Methodius, for their letter of support; which was read to all the delegates at the meeting.

Ny Polet takes a hard hit against Elmont Italians
10/31/2005

After playing excellent game Ny
Polet lost due to not capitalizing on many 100% chances.
Ny Polet was dominating throughout first and second half of the game. After receiving red card in the beginning of a second half, Elmont Italians were completely helpless against well playing team of NY Polet. Unfortunately, only chance Elmont Italians had, was capitalized.
At the end NY Polet was harshly punished for not scoring their chances. Final result was 1:0 for Elmont Italians.
We hope next game in league cup will be used for tweaking forward line in order to improve scoring.

NY Polet holds Istria SC to a scoreless tie.
10/24/2005

A Week after winning the opening round of the State Cup competition, NY Polet was at home for a crucial divisional game against Istria SC. Polet began the game in high spirits and tried to take advantage of an Istria team that began the game at less than full strength. Polet dominated the play for the first 20 minutes of the competition but could not capatilize on their chances. The best opportunity came 15 minutes into the game when midfielder Steve Ditusa found himself in front of Istria's goal with several options, but his shot missed wide of the right post. Twenty minutes in, Istria was at full strength and the momentum shifted as Istria created the better chances before the end of the first half. Istria's best opportunity came just before halftime on a free kick from 20 yards out, but Polet goalkeeper Claudio Kolega dove to his right to make a good save and keep the game scoreless at halftime.

The two teams were evenly matched for most of the second half. Polet had a chance to open the scoring mid way through when midfielder Damir Penava sent a low cross into the box that just missed sliding forward Evan Woodhouse for the tap in. Istria maintained pressure on the Polet goal for most of the half, but could not get by the excellent play of Polet's sweeper Anthony Viskovich and the rest of the Polet defense. But with 15 minutes left to go in the game, Polet's central defender Filip Loncar received his second yellow card of the game for a challenge from behind and was sent off the field. Istria took advantage of the extra man in the final minutes and created several good scoring chances but could not break Viskovich's stingy defense and Kolega's excellent goalkeeping. The game ended in a scoreless tie.

Next game Polet travels away to play Elmont Italia.

Ny Polet defeated Chernomorets to qulify for next round of State Cup
10/16/2005

After an average start of the season, NY Polet 2nd DIV team
started its cup season in excellent fashion. Even though first
half of the game was not so much in favor on NY Polet, the team
held up pretty strong against excellent Chernomorets. Mostly
thanks to excellent goalkeeper Anthony Vučenik. Unfortunately
Chernomorets scored first in the 25th minute after NY Polet
defense mishap. However, NY Polet did not fall behind but
instead they continued the game in a higher gear. Excellent
chance to tie the game came from the free kick in the 35th minute
when defense player Phillip Loncar took a crack on the net. Unluckily
for Ny Polet the ball hit right post and bounced down the goal line
to out. Not long after another free kick was given to NY Polet. Even
though it was almost 40 yards away from the goal, Lončar decided to
launch the rocket. Chernomorets defense underestimated Lončar and
placed only two players in the wall. Unfortunately for Chernomorets,
the ball was so fast that no one even saw it while it was stretching
back of the net. It was 1:1 in the 40th minute.

Second half of the game NY Polet took over. Most exciting time
was when Evan Woodhouse launched a beautiful kick in the 20th
minute of second half hitting the top bar of the goal. Despite
all of the efforts NY Polet just could not score the lead goal.
Another beautiful chance came when Zoran Rendić was given a beautiful
pass from Woodhouse. He came all by himself with a goalie on left top
of the 18 yard line and cracked it with all his power. Regretfully the
ball went far right from the goal.

Tied at the end of second half, game went to overtime. With both
team tired not too many chances happened in extra 30 minutes
although NY Polet was much better despite having only 2 substitutions.

After all was done and game was tied it was time for penalty shootouts.
NY Polet went into penalty shootouts very confident. All 5 goals were
scored and with Chernomorets hitting top bar on one penalty kick, Ny
Polet swept a victory of final 6:5. These are the players that scored
on penalty kicks; Freddy Rodriguez, Damir Penava, Zoran Rendic, Evan
Woodhouse and Anthony Viskovich.

After all, it was very visible that NY Polet finally started
playing like a true team. Players started to blend in with each
other creating a much smoother game. It was a pleasure to watch the game.

Polet over 30 wins the Seamus Gillen Memorial Tournament Division II Championship
8/28/2005

Division II Championship by 5 to 4 on penalty kicks (3-3 at the end of
regulation). The Championship Game looked bleak, for the Polet squad,
until the 5-minute mark of the second half. Down 3 to 1, and knowing
that there wasn’t much time, the team rallied around one another and
managed to score two goals within the span of four minutes to knot the
game at 3-3. The scoring was started early in the first half by Zoran
Vukosavljevic. And, after a long drought, it was wrapped up by the
brilliant scoring of Zef Dokic and Sinisa Vujacinovic. It is important
to mention that had it not been for the unbelievable performance of net
minder Jack Badzim the game would have been well out of reach as early
as the first half. His point blank saves were worthy to be on the
famous Top 10 Plays of the week. Nikola Dokic and Sime Bergan provided
most of the scoring in the preliminary stages. And Elvis along with
Davor Glavan were constant threats from their full back positions.
Chris Grando was a worthy substitute who contributed both defensively
and offensively. However, all five were long gone by the time the final
game approached. With a depleted offense and a limping defense the team
proved what the word team is all about and put on a performance worthy of
applause. Once the penalty stage was started there was no question to
the outcome. While all Polet players converted their chances one move
by Jack Badzim ensured victory. On the third Rovers attempt a shot was
taken to Jacks right. He dove in the direction of the shot and with his
body fully stretched he knocked the ball away from the net. Sinisa
Vujacinovic started the scoring with a brilliant stroke.
Tome Kadic
followed him. The third successful striker was Mike Leone and the
fourth was Branko Rakamaric. With the game in his hands, Josip
Jurkovic walked to the penalty spot and converted his chance by
placing the ball well out of reach of the keeper and into the top
right corner of the net and secured the well-deserved victory.

We should all be honored to have participated in this tournament.
Most of the participants have no idea who Seamus was and what
contributions he made to the Rovers and the LISFL. It’s sufficient to
say that he was a good man and that he founded the Rovers team with
hard work and dedication. His contributions to the LISFL are
immeasurable. He was a long time board member that was as equally
dedicated to that job.

Congratulations to all teams on a tournament well played.
Congratulations to the Rovers’ teams and tournament organizers.

NY Polet team to compete on Croatian picnic in New Jersey.
6/9/2005

It was finally decided and organized. NY Polet will compete on Croatian picnic
in New Jersey. The games start at 12:30 on June 12th and everyone is hoping for one more
tournament title this year. Even though NY Polet is not doing to well in 2nd
division, they did show much success in small tournament competitions this year.
NY Polet already took first place in two tournaments out of two that they have
played this year. Let's hope that this streak will continue boosting moral of the
team. So come and support NY Polet in their quest for yet another trophy. Good luck Team!!

Kolega Saves Penalty in Stoppage Time to Preserve Polet's 1-0 Victory.
5/22/2005

Goalkeeper Claudio Kolega saved a penalty shot in stoppage time
to help New York Polet to a 1-0 victory at home against Glen Cove
this past Sunday. The game was a crucial one for Polet who started
the day only 4 points from the relegation zone. After a scoreless
first half, Polet opened the scoring in the 60th minute when striker
Evan Woodhouse caught the Glen Cove goalkeeper flat footed and beat
him with a well taken 20 yard shot. Down by a goal, Glen Cove began
to push into the attack and had their best opportunity to tie the
score on a corner kick in the 70th minute. But Polet defender
Matthew Princi blocked several shots on the play and did well to
clear the ball from in front of the net. Glen Cove continued to
pressure but couldn't find a way past Princi, veteran sweeper Davor
Rosini, and the rest of the Polet defense. Polet took further control
of the match in the 80th minute when a Glen Cove defender was red carded
for bringing down Woodhouse on a breakaway. On the subsequent free kick,
Polet's Zoran Sime Rendic had a golden opportunity to put the game away,
but had his shot blocked by the Cove defense. With only minutes left in
the game, Cove got the break they were looking for when Princi was called
for a hand ball in the penalty area on what was a very unlucky bounce.
The referee immediately whistled a penalty and Glen Cove looked sure to
leave the field with a tie score. But Kolega guessed correctly on the
ensuing penalty shot and dove to his right to make a terrific save.
The final whistle blew shortly after and N.Y. Polet walked away with
all three crucial points.

New York Polet Soccer Club and Friends Party at the Croatian Center!
5/13/2005

New York Polet Soccer Club and its friends packed
the Croatian Center on Friday night for their first annual
fundraiser event. The doors opened at 10pm and more than
140 people came out to help in the celebration and to show
their support for the Club. The event was a great success
for the entire New York Croatian soccer community and some
of the guests included players from fellow Croatian clubs
New York Hajduk and Astoria Rudar. New York Polet Soccer
Club wants to thank all of those who came out for the party
and everyone in the community who showed their support. It
was a joyful and festive atmosphere that went well into the night.
Johnny Skibola and Grupa More along with DJ George Corluka
entertained with great music that had the crowd dancing, singing,
and partying throughout the night. The night couldnt have been
a success without the help and volunteer work from a few special
people. Kristina Nanjara, Tomislav Cogelja (Cogi), and Natalie
Skara did a fabulous job behind the bar while Daniela Kolega,
Diana Bacich, Robert Bacich, and Anthony Kolega did their part
at the doors. Pictures from the event can be seen on our website.
A special thanks to Fra. Ivica Majstorovic and the Sts. Cyril and
Methodius Croatian Parish for the use of the Nikola Tavelic Croatian
Center and for all their support. We look forward to continuing a
renewed interest in Croatian soccer here in New York and many more
great nights in the near future. Thanks.

Polet loses at home against Real Caribe
5/1/2005

A week after their disappointing away loss at Five Towns,
New York Polet was looking to get back on track at home
last Sunday against a strong Real Caribe squad. Polet
started strongly and controlled most of the play in the
first half. Midfielder Damir Penavas strike in the
20th minute of the game gave Polet an early lead.
But Caribe managed to tie the score right before
the halftime whistle with a well placed free kick
from 20 yards out. In the 60th minute, Polet again
found themselves with the lead when Anthony Viskovich
did well to put Vjeko Luburic through on goal. Luburic
managed to hold off a Caribe defender and bury the ball
in the back of the net to give Polet a 2-1 lead. Polet
seemed in control of the game until the 75th minute when
a defensive breakdown allowed Caribe to the tie the score.
The momentum had shifted and another costly error by the
Polet defense put Caribe up 3-2. It was a frantic finish
in the final 10 minutes as Polet pushed into the attack to
try to find an equalizer. The two teams traded quick goals
as Caribe scored on the counter attack and Polet answered
on a rocket from Filip Loncar from 30 yards out. Caribe
finished the scoring in extra time with another counter
and won the match 5-3.
Polet now looks ahead to its next match on May 15th,
when they travel to play Hicksville at Triangle Field.
Hicksville currently sits at the bottom of the Division
2 standings making this a must win game for both teams.

N.Y. Polet starts the spring with a big win at Home
4/17/2005

New York Polet hosted Lake Grove at Flushing Memorial
High School on Sunday for a crucial Division 2 match up.
Lake Grove was coming off a big 4-1 victory over Istria
S.C. a week earlier and found themselves entering the
game only 1 point behind the division leaders, Lindenhurst.
Polet was in action for the first time this spring season
and was looking to put a disappointing fall behind them.
Polet finished the first half of the season with only 8
points out of their first 8 games and needed a strong game at home to start the spring.
Polet started the game on the offensive and kept Lake
Grove on their heels for most of the first half. Polet
came close to opening the scoring in the 20th minute when
midfielder Vjekoslav Luburic took a precision pass from
Captain Zoran Sime Rendic and rattled a left footed shot
off Lake Groves crossbar. Luburic, along with midfielders
Anthony Viskovich, Vicko Sunjka, and Freddy Rodriguez
controlled the middle of the pitch and the tempo for the
majority of the first half. Polet continued to pressure
their opponents in the second half and were able to take
the lead in the 60th minute when forward Evan Woodhouse beat a Grove defenseman to the outside and rifled a shot
in the top corner of the net. It was only 10 minutes later,
when Woodhouse again beat his marker and shot another beauty
to beat Lake Groves goalkeeper and give Polet a comfortable 2-0 lead.
Lake Grove had an opportunity to get one back shortly after, but
goalkeeper Claudio Kolega was one step quicker and beat Groves
forward to the ball on a fast break. Lake Grove continued to
pressure Polets defense and scored in the 80th minute to cut
Polets lead to 2-1. But three minutes from time, it was
Woodhouse again, whose initial shot rebounded off Groves
goalkeeper directly to Rodriguez who emphatically put the
ball away to give Polet the 3-1 lead and the victory.

Over 30s disappointed with draw at home
3/26/2005

The Polet Over-30 squad returned from the winter break
in disappointing fashion with a 4-4 draw against Locust
Valley at Flushing Memorial H.S. Finishing the fall
session only 2 points from the top of the Over 30-B
division, Polet was excited to get the spring season under way.
With three first half goals from newcomer Zef Dokic and one from
Christian Racic, who was on loan from the idle first team, Polet took a
4-1 lead into the halftime break. An over confident Polet team could not
find the back of the net in the second half and allowed Locust Valley to
crawl its way back into the game. A last minute goal by the Valley left
Polet with one point on the day and a disappointing start to the spring season.
Over 30s Coach Dragan Jurkovic was not happy with the teams performance in
the second half and vowed that Polet will be better prepared for their next
league game. The Over 30s next match is away against Jamaica Portuguese on April 17.

N.Y. Polet captures Sports Underdome Indoor Championship
3/2/2005

Ukranian F.C. beat N.Y. Polet the first two times
they met in the group stages of the Sports Underdome
Indoor Tournament. But the third time was a charm for
Polet, who met the Ukranians in the finals. In the
Championship Game, Polet took a 2-1 lead into halftime
with two first half goals from Evan Woodhouse. But it
was Vjeko Luburics strike early in the second half that
shifted the momentum into Polets favor. Luburic made
several quick moves and slotted a 20 yard shot into the
lower corner of the oppositions net. Luburics strike
was the first of five straight goals from Polet. Robert
Pribanic, Damir Penava, Matt Princi, and Filip Loncar all
scored to help Polet to a 7-1 lead. Goalkeeper Claudio Kolega
frustrated the Ukranians the entire game and Polet went on to
win the title.

N.Y. Polet wins 2005 Pat Ryder Memorial Indoor Tournament
2/27/2005

All four Croatian teams in the LISFL advanced to the
final round of the 2005 Pat Ryder Memorial Indoor Tournament.
N.Y. Hajduk and Astoria Rudar lost their quarterfinal matches,
while Istria S.C. and N.Y. Polet advanced to meet each other
in a hard fought semifinal. It was a rematch from the first
round group play where Polet came back from a 2-0 deficit to
defeat Istria 3-2 on a last minute goal from Filip Loncar.
Loncar did it again in Polets earlier quarterfinal game when
he scored a last minute game winning goal to beat Lake Grove.
Against Istria, it was Vicko Sunjka who led Polet to a 3-1 victory
and scored the goal of the tourney with a 30 yard rocket into the
top corner of Istrias net. The momentum from Sunjkas magnificent
strike carried over into the championship game where Polet dominated
Five Towns on their way to a 3-1 victory. It was the first time
Polet captured the leagues Pat Ryder Indoor Cup.
